So, just briefly, Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of the first Halo single-player campaign. It has modern graphics, modern gameplay additions like the ability to sprint and recharging shields / health that weren't in the original, and some of the levels have been tweaked and remade to be a little more streamlined. It's not huge sweeping changes like the Resident Evil remakes or, excuse me while I barf, the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, though. The core guts are still there and it is definitely, unmistakably, Halo 1. Just updated and refreshed and some rough edges sanded off.
And "everyone" hates it. I don't get it. But I also don't really think a lot of that online hate - for this or anything else, really - is actually genuine. Halo hasn't really been a top-tier "event" game for a while, and that coupled with the general dark cloud from online folks that surrounds everything Xbox has tried to do for the last 10+ years, means that Campaign Evolved became an easy target for people eager to pounce on Xbox any time it seems to stumble. So when Campaign Evolved didn't set the world on fire first week sales-wise, online grifters and influencers and drama peddlers smelled blood in the water and rushed in with their hot takes about how much it sucks. It's a reflection of the sad state of journalism in 2026 where they just chase easy clicks and tell people what they want to hear. And then, of course, pea-brained knuckle-dragging morons just repeat it all, probably without actually playing it, and you get this weird overwhelming snowballing feeling that everyone hates it.
I'm here to tell you that there are people out there that absolutely love Halo: Campaign Evolved. Like me. I do. And my friends do. I'll go so far as to say I honestly think it's one of my favorite remakes ever. And I'm no fair weather Halo fan, either. Halo: Combat Evolved has been my favorite campaign in the series for almost 25 years now. I truly love the original game. And I love this remake just as much if not more - Seriously, it's just so much more fun to actually play right now in 2026 than the original.
Why do I love it? For one, it looks gorgeous. Of course, I also think the Halo Anniversary remaster also looked "fine" and everyone hates that too, but whatever. Campaign Evolved has fantastic looking environments, great lighting, and they actually made the flood seem truly creepy and scary this time around.
I also love the way it plays. Halo has always had great feeling shooting and overall movement, and this one is no different. But they also changed some key things for the better. Halo 1 was back in the days of slow plodding movement and having to collect health packs in the levels so using this opportunity - since it's a remake and all - to modernize the game with recharging health and a sprint button was a welcome change. As was fixing up the levels - in some cases extensively - to just make them more fun to play. The backtracking is mostly gone. The samey looking interiors that required glowing arrows on the floor to point you in the right direction have been tidied up and simplified so progress is more streamlined. Yes, it's more linear than the original, but it's just so much more pleasant to play now! And the Library level is no longer a slog. I'll say it again - Campaign Evolved is just so much more fun to play than the original.
The complaints about the game are just weird overall to me because they fixed everything people have been whining about for, literally, the last 25-years. But now, suddenly, everyone is all precious and protective about the stuff they used to complain about. The Venn diagram of people that would say they didn't like Halo 1 that much a year ago, but hate the changes that fixed the stuff they didn't like in this remake, would absolutely be a flat circle. They don't even know what they're complaining about anymore.
More positively, the amount of content in Halo: Campaign Evolved deserves praise as well. It has the campaign mostly how you remember it, of course, but three new prequel missions as well. Now, the quality of those new missions is iffy - the first one kinda sucks but the other two are solid - but they didn't have to do it at all. I appreciate them adding this new stuff. I also love that they went crazy with the skulls in the game that give you unlimited ammo and you can fly and grunts explode and like 40 other cheats you can turn on and off after you find the skulls in the levels. The skulls seriously make the game so much freaking fun to play! As does the new Remix mode that changes the enemies you encounter in the levels as well as the weapons you find. Between the skulls and remix mode and freaking co-op with your friends, this is easily the most replayable Halo campaign ever. There are some creative achievements, too, that make you play in ways you wouldn't normally that were tons of fun as well.
I will say I do have one complaint, and that is the sound isn't quite right. The music isn't mixed loud enough so memorable moments from the original don't quite have the same impact in this one. Some people are also being weird about Chief being too chatty or Cortana not having the right personality, or something, but those people are dumb and wrong and are looking for things to whinge about. That music mix is definitely an issue, though.
Anyway. Finally. Ultimately. With all that said, I just want to repeat that I loved Halo: Campaign Evolved. It always feels like we're drowning in a sea of cynicism and negativity and you can feel overwhelmed when it seems like "everyone" online hates something you genuinely enjoy. So I just wanted to make this video to be a light in the darkness and prove that, yes, there are people that are having a great time with the game. I'll repeat what I said at the beginning. If you're loving it too, you aren't alone. You aren't weird. It's the other losers who are wrong.
